AVRFC's goal is for the boys to have fun learning and playing the game of rugby in a safe and supportive atmosphere - not only for the players but also for the coaches, referees and parents. Families from all communities in Northern Fairfield County are encouraged to participate. The spring season will begin in March with 2 indoor practices per week working on basic ball handling drills and learning the game of rugby. AVRFC will move onto outdoor fields in April. Games will be played on the weekends in May and June.
Rugby is an exciting, fun, free flowing game designed for players of
all shapes, sizes and athletic abilities. It involves skills such as running, passing, catching, kicking, decision-making and supporting teammates. Rugby teaches children to think on their feet by playing a game that does not stop for time outs or breaks in play.
Aspetuck Valley Rugby Club Committee Chairwomen Tracy Sennett also reports that "rugby also builds strong self confidence and camaraderie through participation in a sport where sportsmanship is not just a word but is embraced and expected by the worldwide Rugby community. We are thrilled with the high level of interest already expressed by families in the communities of Redding, Wilton, Easton, Bethel, Weston and others."
Today, rugby is played in more than 90 countries, making it one of the most popular sports in the world. The Rugby World Cup is the third most watched sporting event in the world. In addition, Rugby 7's will be played in the Olympic Games beginning in Rio de Janeiro 2016, and a non medal sport in London in 2012. Rugby in the USA has been growing steadily. There are over 60,000 registered players in America.
